Lots of resources are available when it comes to teaching. One of the resources I utilize is my advisory committee. This committee consists of parents, former students, college educators, and business managers within the community.
We meet once or twice a year to discuss the curriculum. I will ask the business managers what skills are needed in the workforce and I will ask former students what they remembered about the program and what could be improved.
It is amazing what I learn.
Other resources I use are websites, books, other teachers in the building, teachers in other schools teaching the same program as me.

I think it's great that you have such a diverse committee to give input. See what they are using in the business world today in terms of social media, Twitter, Facebook etc. to grow their business model and prepare your students accordingly.

ReplyDeleteI agree with John. The committee you're involved with is a fantastic thing. Understanding and knowing what students need to be taught via real-world people is a great thing. At times we don't provide our students with real world skills because we are "only in the classroom." As a result, discussing these ideas with people who are in the workforce benefits your students greatly! Excellent idea!
Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI have been teaching a similar course for the last two years with very little support. So, I am impressed with the committee you are part of by bringing together parents, former students, educators whom are all from your community.
